They’re ready, folks! The sweet onions are fresh and ready to go! I tell you what, my mouth is watering just THINKING about them. And the best part is… this is only the beginning of the great crops Merck Farms has coming your way this summer. Look out!!
Now to start cooking: onion soup, onions on hamburgers, onions in salsa, onion rings… Oh the possibilities!!!
Visit the Merck Farms website to order yours and get cookin’.

A Farm in Full-Swing

What’s been on my mind lately? Let’s just say, if you look through my Google searches, most of them have something to do with food, farming, nutrition, recipes and more. I’m not only obsessed with what I eat, but obsessed with making sure the food I put into my body is healthy and nutritious. Doritos and Coke? Forget about it.

But don’t be fooled, you can still talk me into Sonny’s or a Five Guys burger pretty easily. (Can’t resist those burgers!) And face it, sweet tea is a staple. But fresh produce straight from the land I know and love? There’s something special about knowing exactly where the food you eat comes from. And that’s why we started Merck Farms.

I’m here to share with you the things we find and are learning here at the farm. This is our official blog, mostly brought to you from Taylor (since Farmer Bob is spending all his extra time farming). But don’t worry, he’ll come around for some guest posts. And I assure you Farm Dog Jake will pop in sometimes as well. If not just for a good rub and a treat.

Sweet onions peeking through the surface last summer.

Above: sweet onions peeking through the ground last spring. We are already past that point this year—the onions are almost ready to be pulled and laid to dry out. The sweet wafts of onions will soon be filling our part of the St. Mary’s River.

Summer is quickly approaching at Merck Farms and all of Farmer Bob’s spare time has been filled with planting, watering and watching things grow. In the other bits of time he has, he’s been trying to expand the farm. (I see fruit trees in our future.) Things never slow down for farmers, and having a full-time job on the side doesn’t make it any easier. But he plows on… ha. ha.

We hope that you’re ready for another year of fresh fruits and vegetables that Merck Farms is bringing its community and southeast Georgia. I know I am! Check back this week for more from the farm, and watch this blog start to grow along with the summer crops.
